Your furry friend may be your best friend, but he may not appreciate your yard the way you do. Your dog may love to dig in your freshly planted flowers, or hide his bone in your bushes. Here are some guidelines to landscaping when you have a dog:

• Train your dog to respect boundaries. You can create a perfect yard for you and your dog if you designate areas. You can train your dog to stay out of your flower beds and to do their business in a specific area instead.

• Add a doggy pool. If your dog loves to swim, you can add a doggy pool to your yard. Make sure your dog can easily enter and exit it.

• Create a digging retreat. If your dog loves to dig, try adding a sandbox only for him. Bury bones and treats at first to spark his interest. Keep a shovel nearby to cover holes.

• Edge flowerbeds. To keep your dog out of your flowers or gardens, try adding rocks or shrubs. Don’t use metal edging that could potentially harm your dog.

• Be selective in your plant selection. Certain plants will make your dog sick, so it’s important to research what those plants are before you start gardening. Certain plants can also reduce fleas.

• Create walkways along routes your dog travels. It may be difficult to redirect your dog away from areas he already claimed. By creating a route, your dog will stay in “his safe zone” but still get to explore all of your yard.

• Think before you fertilize. A National Institute of Health study showed the professionally applied pesticides were associated with a 70% higher risk of canine malignant lymphoma. Use organic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides on your lawn and plants.
