Summer’s here — with blooming flowers, the smell of fresh cut grass and the beauty of opening your windows to fresh air. Homeowners are also preparing to get their homes ready for summer — and turning on your air conditioner. However, your air conditioner might have an unpleasant odor coming from it. Trying to figure out where the smell is coming from, what’s causing it and what you can do about it may seem like a never ending process.

If there is an odor coming from your duct work, these could be causing it:

  • Mold. Check your drip pan and make sure there isn’t any water sitting in there. If there is water in there, there could be a potential blockage in the condensate drain line. You might also want to consider a drip pan treatment that keeps the pan clean and free from overflows.
  • “Dirty Sock Syndrome.” Microbial decay builds up during certain times of the year — when your heat pump warms in the morning and cools in the afternoon, which produces condensate and fuels microbial. The best cure is a thorough coil cleaning — call Shorewest Home Services for a professional.
  • Humidity. If your home has high humidity levels, another source of bad odor is mold in your ductwork. Have a mold removal specialist and/or an air-duct cleaning specialist come out and look at your vents.
