Those pesky mosquitoes have been a trending topic in Wisconsin this summer and it seems like they are multiplying at an astounding rate.

Most mosquitoes are active from dusk until dawn, but there are certain types of the insect that are active during the day. A mosquitoes’ sense of smell is 10,000 times better than humans, so the key is to cover the carbon dioxide that we give off.

There are a variety of elements that attract mosquitoes such as lactic acid, cooler skin temperature, perspiration and floral or fruity fragrances. Natural repellents are a great way to mask the carbon dioxide and are a good substitute around children.

Natural repellents include:

· Rubbing a Bounce (fabric softener) sheet on exposed skin

· Vick’s Vapor Rub

· Taking Vitamin B-1 Tablets: The odor we can’t smell throughout our skin repels the insects.

· Garlic supplements or foods with garlic: Can be barriers for alleged certain types of mosquitoes.

Here is a list of oils that are natural repellents to help you from being bitten. Make sure to reapply the oils at least every two-hours.

· Citronella Oil

· Cinnamon Oil

· Castor Oil

· Rosemary Oil

· Peppermint Oil

· Germanium Oil

· Clove Oil

Things that lower repellent effectiveness are: Many sunscreens, dilution from rain or perspiration and just the natural absorption into the skin. Dark clothing and foliage can also attract the insects.

The suggested “natural repellents” are substitutes for synthetic chemicals and do not imply they are safe for everyone. Please consult a physician or read the manufacturer’s instructions or ingredients to be sure that the repellent is safe for you and the people around you.
