America celebrates July 4 as Independence Day because on July 4, 1776 the members of the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. Now it is a national holiday that celebrates our country’s freedom from Great Britain. Festivities vary by state and culture, but here is how to do it big in Wisconsin!
1. The simplest and most patriotic way would be to hang an American flag from your home or decorate your lawn with flags. This is an easy way to show your loyalty and patriotism!
2. Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence aside from when you were in school? Why not get a copy and read up for a refresher! Share with family and friends to remember why we fought and why it’s still worth fighting for.
3. Get creative and patriotic with your wardrobe! Wear red, white, blue or even the American flag on your clothing. Use finger paint to draw the flag on your cheek, wear a flag pin on your clothes or go Pinterest crazy with the U.S. flag on your nails!
4. Support your community by attending a parade! Get into the spirit by waving at participants, clapping as U.S. veterans pass and scooping up the candy that gets tossed at you!
5. Enjoy family time at a barbeque or picnic. Spend the afternoon eating traditional 4th of July food like hamburgers, hotdogs, watermelon and American-flag-themed desserts. Delicious!
6. Wrap up a wonderful day by attending a fireworks show! Most cities and town provide a fireworks display of some kind, make sure to check the website of your city or municipality for details.
